		<description>GALERIENIEMIENIEAt the start of 2025 my colleagues at Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof and I opened GALERIENIEMIENIE.&#38;nbsp; At the bottom of a social housing complex, you’ll find our mini gallery.&#38;nbsp;
This unused space of just 4.5 square meters was generously given to us by Eigen Haard to transform into the tiny gallery that is today.&#38;nbsp;This inny minny gallery can be admired from the corner of Bernard Loderstraat and Jan de Louterstraat (not far from Plein ‘40-’45).&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="3872" height="2592" width_o="3872" height_o="2592" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/246fb1f4276c3de088e763c5de6c20372f9626b052a96c75cf937bff099a57c2/DSC_1344.jpeg" data-mid="1421093" border="0" /&#62;&#60;img width="3872" height="2592" width_o="3872" height_o="2592" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/28e03785b463c88e28972e17b3921d4f8fb178fb70f3e65a72ad6b745fdb0ec8/DSC_1514-copy-3.jpg" data-mid="1421092" border="0" /&#62;&#60;img width="3872" height="2592" width_o="3872" height_o="2592" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/6a2ef998d875d0a852ec513d651c334b230f657ab7275f5379dbcf73dc87a5a6/20250612_ThomVanHoek_Buurtopening12.jpg" data-mid="1421096" border="0" /&#62;When we first moved into the space, in order to get to know the neighborhood, Dané Vonk and I asked residents and locals to lend us an “art object” for the very first exhibition.
In no time, GALERIENIEMIENIE was brimming with cherished items and handmade works of art.As it turns out, art is hidden everywhere in the neighborhood.

During the neighborhood opening, all the exhibiting residents were present.It was a warm and lively gathering, where several neighbors met each other for the very first time.&#60;img width="3872" height="2592" width_o="3872" height_o="2592" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/f4fed2172353a01f23aa178eccbe7093cdc62883a8828a9e3c4f718738dee06f/20250612_ThomVanHoek_Buurtopening02.jpg" data-mid="1421095" border="0" /&#62;&#60;img width="3872" height="2592" width_o="3872" height_o="2592" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/ddab1e0889551a855633c1183a92dc60a9e05ad1688c98e6929cb38ebe75b7ed/20250612_ThomVanHoek_Buurtopening07.jpg" data-mid="1421094" border="0" /&#62;Walk by to see what is currently exhibited at GALERIENIEMIENIE @GALERIENIEMIENIE

		<description>Patchwork&#38;nbsp;
	Patchwork is the title of a work that was part of the exhibition In the Next Step, Everything Changes, which was on view in April 2025 at Plantage Dok.Created in collaboration with visitors during the opening night, this quilt temporarily wove together a variety of stories.

The exhibition explored themes of movement, displacement, change, and rearrangement, and participants were asked the question: What do you always carry with you?

After the opening night, participants were invited to return and cut out their own patch from the quilt, gradually causing the piece to unravel and disappear.&#60;img width="2798" height="3731" width_o="2798" height_o="3731" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/3600836b424013071fea1990a544a9a3a5ee9bb9552a7a93b2e2d721b6761d52/IMG_0157.jpg" data-mid="1421053" border="0" /&#62;

	Collectively Creative /&#38;nbsp;
Creatively Collectiveis a program researching collective responses to the
challenges faced by contemporary creative makers through collaborative learning&#38;nbsp;
Throughout 2024–2025, four editions were hosted at Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof.These programs invited collectives and artists who offered alternative approaches to supporting creativity.Each edition included an artist talk and a workshop, where participants were encouraged to create together.Learning about collectivity took shape through conversation, co-creation and a digital reading group.&#38;nbsp;

Collectively Creative IV: Undefined Spaces
Thursday, March 27th 2025, from 18.30 – 20.30 (soup served at 18.00)Collectively Creative invites Sander Borsje &#38;amp; Tobias Krasenberg, two of the founders of Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof, for an artist talk on designing spaces that foster autonomy.When creating space for creativity, how far should we go in providing tools? Can an unfinished space empower people more than one that is fully designed?

Collectively Creative III: Mycelium Disco

During Museum Night 2024, Mediamatic and Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof joined forces to present Mycelium Disco.This year, the aboveground networks of the Buurtwerkplaats and Mediamatic come together for an extensive program centered on mycelium.Visitors and artists from Nieuw-West will gather to collectively lay the foundation for a future artwork.

Creatively
Collective / invites Roman Tkachenko from the collective Timeis.capital: for an
artist talk and artist, Ken Ebo-Gomez for a zine-making workshop

Self-organized,
creative spaces of gathering exist but often temporarily. &#38;nbsp;As these physical spaces become increasingly fleeting,
we turn to the digital space of Timeis.capital, where resources are gathered,
knowledge is archived, and ephemeral creative spaces are captured as 3D memories.

Collectively Creative /

Creatively Collective / invites Mokum Kraakt: for an artist
talk and artist, Layla Gijsen, for a lino-printing workshop

Preserving space for creative expression is increasingly
challenging. As city rents rise and artistic production is deemed a luxury, how
can we continue to create space for experimentation?

Join us for a collective conversation about designing spaces that support community-building, agency, and artistic experimentation—about undefined spaces and informal gatherings.

This Museum Night marks a special edition of the ongoing program Collectively Creative — a series of projects by artist Claire van der Mee and Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof, which explores collectivity as a response to the challenges faced by contemporary makers.For this edition, we focus on community-building.Artist and researcher Shanna de Ruiter will give a presentation on mycorrhizal fungi, exploring how these underground fungal networks can guide us toward more symbiotic ways of living together — both with one another and with other organisms.

An evening about mycelium wouldn’t be complete without Mediamatic, which has been exploring the versatility of mycelium in its interdisciplinary artworks for over fifteen years.Jet Munneke

Timeis.capital will present their audio-visual project and speak on the urgency
to document self-organized collectives, along with the different strategies
applied in doing so. They will speak of how an online space can echo autonomous
spaces to strengthen the non-institutional art-world and create new energy for
self-organization. &#38;nbsp;

Mokum Kraakt will speak on
how they started squatting to confront this problem. Their squatting activism
isn’t only about living space, but also about space for creativity and art.
They will talk about the exhibitions they organized in squatted buildings, why
they made a book about the struggle for space in Amsterdam, how this evolved
into a new publishing house, and why collective action is necessary to create
alternatives in an unaffordable city.Join us for a collective conversation about reclaiming space
for creativity and practice the accessible technique of lino-cutting so you can
learn to easily produce your own prints.

From Dance Floor to Pigeon Tower
We’ll continue to explore our sense of collectivity during the Gentle Disco, on a dance floor made of mycelium.Artist Arne Hendriks will later use the mycelium blocks to build a pigeon tower at the Buurtwerkplaats, but first, the blocks need to be condensed before they can serve as building materials.

I Am A Rock (Rietveld Graduation Project 2016) is a mixed media installation consisting of latex
sculptures, posters and video work. You step inside a working space- a
strange laboratory. The entire room, including its objects, is one
sculpture. There are many references to rocks and stones yet most of
the stones in the room seem to have lost any material connection to the
rocks we know. A rock speaks in a video, “I am a rock, I could be an
island if I wanted to. You see, it’s all a matter of perception.”

A film and installation that gives a look into the traditions of a strange sub-culture. As they prepare themselves, pulling on their skin colored garments, covering their faces in latex masks, all we can do is wonder: What is it that they’re getting ready for?&#60;img width="2500" height="1401" width_o="2500" height_o="1401" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/1cf870a485830167a8926565eef19c67e4d8a14f3827a843f57c89fb2c616377/Screen-Shot-2018-04-10-at-09.51.05.png" data-mid="1335023" border="0" /&#62;Malleable Flesh was exhibited during:

Pilot: The Art-Cart of Nieuw-West&#60;img width="3300" height="2799" width_o="3300" height_o="2799" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/f8dc912b93c13249c9ed6193ebd0fbfcfab0435511721ca9e2a916b87fcc3c91/1-Kunstkar-oproep.jpg" data-mid="1148593" border="0" /&#62;

Background
and Concept

 It was my
intention to create an object that would attract attention and serve as an
intervention, interrupting everyday life and stirring up conversations. Through
my past fieldwork I had been introduced to a variety of interesting cultural
initiatives and through the Art-Cart I intended to highlight the arts and
culture that Nieuw-West already has to offer. By making arts and culture
more accessible and bringing people into contact with the already present creativity
in the district, I hoped to broaden people’s notion of arts and culture and
give them a sense of agency over creative practices within their neighborhood.
Coffee and tea, and a snack from a local shop would be served from within the
cart to strike up conversations.
 &#60;img width="1365" height="2048" width_o="1365" height_o="2048" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/52b789acc18de44ab93bb8ef5806249546da4e4dde6f24cda0e429892c8da20c/20-IMG_9968-2.jpg" data-mid="1148600" border="0" /&#62; This
project consisted of two participatory parts; designing and building the Art-Cart
at Social Design workshop Noorderhof and the interaction that took place when
the cart took to the streets of Nieuw-West, where artworks were
exhibited and conversations with locals were brought about. Throughout the
timeframe of the project, I was in contact with many artists and organizations
from the district to collect miniature artworks to exhibit or flyers and
brochures to hand out.

	On May 3 &#38;amp; 4 De Kunstkar was part of the Maydan Festival celebrations on Plein 40-45, connecting local cultural programs to passersby as well as offering two workshops by local artists; a one-on-one performance of Monoah’s&#38;nbsp;Economic tarot reading and an upcycling crafts workshop for children hosted by Kim Kind’s Creations &#60;img width="2500" height="1667" width_o="2500" height_o="1667" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/91ec880b9dc28b7823e01443faa09f9e91ab7aaf73d105387a69e1941fe5840a/DSC_7978web.jpg" data-mid="1203604" border="0" /&#62;&#60;img width="2500" height="1667" width_o="2500" height_o="1667" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/abea3f3bfdbdcf347776dd6d5963dd992a05212b4d50f9b188a3865993478734/DSC_7982web.jpg" data-mid="1203605" border="0" /&#62;The
Art-Cart of Nieuw-West is the title of a pilot project realized in the period
of October 1st – December 12th, 2021, in the district of Amsterdam Nieuw-West.&#38;nbsp;Commissioned by Amsterdam’s city council, the project is part of the
European Access network dedicated to contributing to more inclusivity in arts
and culture in various European cities.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; This short-term pilot tested whether a more inclusive cultural climate could be achieved within the district. Furthermore, sociology students from the VU (Vrije
Universiteit) of Amsterdam would follow the project and write their own
reports and recommendations.
 &#60;img width="2048" height="1365" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/359fb6ad62d181802446b7def0c211d76c7360ce90d4daaf30825cafbc4187cc/IMG_9737.jpg" data-mid="1148595" border="0" /&#62;&#60;img width="1086" height="724" width_o="1086" height_o="724" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/53387835022423656ac7348f6ecf015c5f2da887346004fee27ad0ebcaef5ea0/D37A15F3-3C89-470B-B36A-9EF6321A847B_1_105_c.jpeg" data-mid="1148602" border="0" /&#62;
 &#38;nbsp;  &#38;nbsp;

The
art-cart was built in three days at Social Design Workshop Noorderhof (Buurtwerkplaats
Noorderhof). The designing and building of the cart were offered as workshops
and for this I approached two local artists to supervise the process. Maus
Bottin, currently working as a film-prop designer, and Alice Sprascio, a
design-lab graduate, both studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam
and live and work in a nearby broedplaats. The cart was built in
collaboration with the artists and the volunteer team from Buurtwerkplaats
Noorderhof.

The
building of the cart took place on November 10, 11 and 12, 2021, and was mainly
constructed from secondhand material. The fee paid at the buurtwerkplaats covers
the use of their workshop and materials, but also gives the volunteers who
participated in the project the possibility to receive a new tool to add to
their toolbox.&#60;img width="3648" height="2432" width_o="3648" height_o="2432" src_o="https://cortex.persona.co/t/original/i/77a0acea0e27819b15499441ecd68567339ff90a5671e244d0c68a0b84bc5bfa/3-IMG_9938.JPG" data-mid="1148601" border="0" /&#62;

		<description>De Kunstmatige Gemeenschap (EN: The Artificial Community) is a&#38;nbsp; cricital text about art communities within contemporary Dutch broedplaatsen (EN: incubators). The essay uses the Covid19 pandemic as a lens to highlight the importance of communities and why space should be reserved for the formation of legitimate and lasting communities. This text is a follow-up to the thesis I wrote on the subject.You can find the essay and thesis below:

	Self(ie) 2018

From Narcissus fascinated
by his own reflection
in the surface of a pond
to tourists standing in front of a monument
with their iPhone pointed at themselves:Humanity has always felt the urge
to document themselves,
to capture a moment of perfection.&#38;nbsp;
We send satellites up into space
just so we can photograph our Earth.&#38;nbsp;
Is it self-love,&#38;nbsp;
self-research
or self-obsession?Self(ie) is a video installation consisting of multiple screens. The screens simultaneously tell a story of self-documentation.&#38;nbsp;
